Mural
for The Texas A&M University-Commerce Music Building
"Music On Parade" by David Zvanut
In August of 2009, The Catholic Foundation of Dallas invited
professional artists living in the North Texas area to submit proposal
designs for consideration. A panel of highly respected members of the
Dallas arts community then chose "Music On Parade" as the winning
piece. It was displayed on a 28’ by 9’8” wall for approximately one
year at the
Catholic
Foundation Plaza located on the grounds of the Cathedral Shrine of
the Virgin of Guadalupe in the Dallas Arts District, directly across
from the Meyerson Symphony Center. Upon it's removal, I began a
search for a fitting permanent home for this work. I chose the TAMU-C
music building because of my long affiliation with TAMU-C and the
local community. I began my college career here as a music and art
major, studying piano with Dr. John Harris. I received both a BFA and
MFA from East Texas State University, as this university was known at
the time. I shared my idea with the music building design team, and
with their enthusiastic endorsement, I subsequently donated the work to
the University. The copy of Music On Parade that was displayed in the
Catholic Foundation Plaza was not designed to withstand a permanent
installation and was destroyed in the removal process. The copy on
display at TAMU-C was printed on a 23' by 8' canvas which was then
stretched and hung above the stairway in the east entry foyer of the
new Music Building. A video of the installation process can be seen
